Guide — Focus Fern

Focus Fern is a free, no-login focus timer for students and remote workers. You pick a session length, focus against a quiet scene, and every time you finish a focus session a new plant sprouts in your garden. Here is everything it does and how to get the most from it.

What is Focus Fern?

Focus Fern is a browser-based focus timer built around one small reward: finish a session and you grow a plant. Over days those plants become a garden, and a running streak counts every day you show up. It is a pomodoro-style timer at heart — a stretch of focus followed by a short break — but the point is the calm and the garden, not the clock.

There is no sign-up, no app to install, and nothing to pay. It works on your phone or your laptop, and everything you do is saved on your own device.

How to use it

  1. Pick a length. Tap the length pill or the settings gear and choose a preset — 25/5, 50/10, or 15/3 minutes of focus and break — or set your own custom lengths.
  2. Press Start. The dial counts down while you work. A soft ambient scene sits behind it so the screen stays calm rather than busy.
  3. Focus. You can pause and resume if you are interrupted, or reset to begin the phase again. The countdown is based on the real clock, so it stays accurate even if you switch tabs or lock your phone.
  4. Finish. When the focus phase completes you hear a gentle chime and a new plant sprouts into your garden. A short break begins so you can rest your eyes.
  5. Share. Tap “Share your garden” to generate a card showing your hours, streak, and garden — then save it or share it. The card is made entirely from your numbers; there is no text box to fill in.

Tips for a real focus habit

Frequently asked questions

Is it free? Yes, completely. The site is supported by unobtrusive ads on the guide and around the page, never over the timer or your garden.

Do I need an account? No. There is no login, email, or profile. Your garden, streak, and settings are stored only in your browser.

Will it keep counting if I switch tabs? Yes. The timer reads the real clock, so a session that finishes while the tab is hidden is credited the moment you return.

What happens if I clear my browser data? Because everything is stored locally, clearing site data or using a different device starts you with a fresh, empty garden. Nothing is kept on a server to restore.

Why do my plants all look different? Every plant is drawn from scratch from the moment its session finished, so no two are alike. You will see ferns, leafy sprouts, lucky clovers, plump succulent rosettes, and little blooming tulips, and longer sessions grow taller, more mature plants — the mix is what makes a full garden card worth sharing.

Does a break grow a plant? No — only completed focus sessions add a plant and count toward your streak and totals.
